Spanish Wells to Royal Island

We made final preparation for moving to Royal Island for the night.  Dwayne and Frank borrowed a couple of wagons and headed off to get diesel since the marina had no fuel dock.  Carla and Carol went to buy groceries since this might be the last “super market” we see until we get to Nassau in three or four weeks.  Carla also filled our water tanks with 50 gallons of water at 50 cents a gallon.  We cast off at 1100 with the help of Frank and Carol.

Off to Get Diesel

We were able to sail to Royal Island which was a pleasant change to motoring.  The winds died down considerably over night.  The forecast is for winds from the east 10 – 15 knots through the rest of the week.  This would be perfect for our journey south along Eleuthera’s western shore.

There were over a dozen boats already anchored at Royal Island when we arrived at 1 PM.  A dozen more showed up before nightfall.  People were glad to get back on the water after being holed up for 4 days due to high winds and waves.  The anchorage will be mostly empty tomorrow morning.  Some will be heading north to the Abacos, some west to Nassau and others like us south to follow the coast of Eleuthera or head for the Exumas.  Spanish Wells and Royal Island are a crossroads in the central Bahamas.

We continued to prepare for our trip south by changing the engine and lower unit oil in our outboard motor.  We got the job done without making too big of a mess in the cockpit.  We put the outboard back on the dinghy and ran it for a while to make sure all was in order.  We also filled the dinghy fuel tank with gas and put the oars back in the dinghy so we had an alternative form of propulsion should the outboard cease to run.  We don’t want to be adrift in the ocean.

Carla prepared a wonderful steak and potatoes dinner.  We finished the day reading and listening to music.  Tomorrow we can sleep in as we have to wait for slack tide to pass through Current Cut which is our gateway to Eleuthera.
