Weather Delay = Road Trip to New York City

Bad weather was predicted for the Delaware Bay.

As a result, the HHSA cruisers decided to delay the departure from Summit North Marina for Cape May by a day.

The weather forecast for New York City looked good.  So, we rented a car and headed to NYC for the day.

Carla and Dwayne toured the Cloisters Museum.

Tom visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Sira roamed the streets of Tribeca and Soho.

Long But Fast Trip to Summit North Marina

Tom at Summit North Marina - Diva II Pot Luck

We weighed anchor at 0730 and departed Worton Creek along with 4 other boats from the Herrington Harbour Sailing Assn bound for Summit North Marina on the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal for one last stop prior to entering the Delaware Bay and heading south to Cape May.

Winds were in our favor and built from the low teens to mid-20’s during the day as we swiftly sailed on a single reach the entire way up the Bay until arriving at Turkey Point on the Elk River.  We hit a top speed of 8.1 knots under sail.  We reefed the genoa to 85% to flatten out the ride while the winds were in the mid-20’s.  The boat handled well and can take a lot of wind.

Bound for New York City

Foreign Affair is now bound for New York City.  We expect to arrive on/about 2 July.

Sira, a friend of the family and German university student has joined us as crew.  Also aboard is Dwayne’s cousin Tom.  Both have been very helpful in getting the boat ready for this journey.

Grandaughters Arrive

Granddaughters, Megan and Lauren arrived to stay with us for a few days.  Their mother had to attend a short notice business meeting in Virginia and decided to bring the girls along for a surprise visit.

They were the first of several guests to surprise us with a visit prior to our leaving Herrington Harbour to begin our journey toward New York City and points north.

If It Is Monday - It Is $5.00 Burgers at Happy Harbor Restaurant

Deck at Happy Harbor Restaurant

It IS Monday!  Time for $5.00 burgers on the deck at Happy Harbor Restaurant.  Big juicy burgers made to order and cold beer to chase it down.

Happy Harbor is a favorite of charter captains, fishermen and other interesting characters. Great food and terrific daily specials.  A fun place.

Good eats and cheap too.  Serving since 1933.

San Domingo Creek with HHSA

The Herrington Harbour Sailing Association cruise to San Domingo Creek was organized by Maris and Linda Eshleman who recently returned from wintering in the Bahamas on their beautiful Island Packet 380, "Amekaya". They had many interesting stories to tell and many questions to answer for their guests.  They will be traveling north for the summer and perhaps we might meet them somewhere in Long Island sound or Cape Cod.

HHSA Cruise to San Domingo Creek

Joined several other boats from the Herrington Harbour Sailing Association for a cruise to San Domingo Creek. Niece Kathy and her boyfriend Andrew went along as crew.

They took dramamine to ward off sea sickness. The Bay was smooth as glass.  The meds and heat caused them to sleep most of the way to San Domingo Creek. A bit of alcohol might have been a factor as well.

Anchor and Chain

We spent most of the day swapping out our anchors and painting chain.  Dwayne's method of improving the odds that the anchor won't drag is to use the best anchor type on board for the bottom conditions and have a big anchor attached to a long chain.

Race Committee Duty for Wednesday Night Races

Jubilee and her crew served as the Race Committee boat and Race Committee.

It was a great day to be racing as the winds were 10 -14 and the sun shone bright.

All starts went off without a flaw.  All flag hoists and douses were well executed and in sync with the horn signals.

Nicro Vent

The solar powered vent for the shower was not functioning.  We replaced it with a new Nicro Vent. Installation went without any problems.  Air is now continuously circulating through the shower stall.

When someone is not taking a shower, the shower stall is used as a closet for wet gear.  As a result, we need this area well ventilated to prevent mold or mildew.

The Glass Man from Glass Werks

Foreign Affair  experienced a little damage to her transom during her winter storage.  We moved the boat to a floating dock at the marina so Mark could work on the repair.  He is truly an expert at his trade and an artist with gelcoat. He perfectly matched the boat's white and you can't tell there was ever a scratch in the hull. He thrilled Carla when he made of gift to her of the unused gelcoat so she could fix some dings elsewhere on the boat.
We highly recommend Glass Werks and Mark (the Glass Man) to anyone needing gelcoat or fiberglass repairs.

HHSA Crazy Hat Cruise to Saltworks Creek June 6 and 7

We finally have the boat ready for our first weekend cruise with the Herrington Harbour Sailing Association (HHSA).  This is the Crazy Hat Cruise to Saltworks Creek on the Severn River just north of Annapolis.

We sailed for a couple of hours with the wind on our nose and one reef in the sail.  By noon we switched to engine power since we were not making great time up the bay and wanted to arrive in time for cocktail hour.  We caught up with Skylark, a Catalina 400 and Diva II, a Catalina 380 at the mouth of the Severn River and followed them to Saltworks Creek.  The entrance was a little tricky and we touched bottom a few times but quickly recovered and got back into the main channel.

The anchorage was spectacular.  Quiet and good holding.  Several boats rafted up and served as the party platforms.  We anchored out alone not far from the rest of the group.  Nine HHSA boats shared the anchorage.

Brother Brian joined us for the weekend.  So, of course we went as Packer Backers and wore our cheese heads.  Apparently, commercially made hats made of plastic cheese were insufficiently original to win the top prize in the crazy hat contest.  A real bird's nest and fake bird on a genuine straw hat won the crowd's approval.

Brian put together a video of our journey.

Wednesday Night Race Night Wet and Windy

Light rain fell as we headed out to the starting line. Winds were in the high teens and gusts to high twenties.

Jubilee got a good start and lead the fleet from start to finish.  However, once again, Lady Gray beat us on adjusted time.

Annapolis Again

It rained today, so we went to Annapolis to pick up parts for the boat and get lunch.  Had a fine meal at the Middleton Tavern which has been an inn/restaurant since 1750.

George Washington ate there; as did Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.  I doubt the we sat at the same table any of them ate at since the decor looked quaint but less than 250 years old.

Water works

Discovered the emergency tiller doesn't fit the boat.  The emergency tiller post has a slightly larger diameter than the boat's tiller post into which it is to be inserted.  A replacement from the boat's manufacturer is rather pricey so we are looking at alternative solutions.
