Nassau Day 8

The winds continued to howl through the rigging and waves constantly rocked the boat.  The forecast doesn’t look good for the rest of the week.  In fact, it will get worse before it gets better.  Somewhat surprisingly, we have a new neighbor who came in from the Exumas.

FradiLira - Hallberg-Rassy 46

FradiLira, a 46 foot Hallberg-Rassy cutter flying German colors pulled into the slip next to us.  We helped them tie off.  Dwayne welcomed them to the “neighborhood” and invited them over for a visit once they were settled.  Later, Dwayne and Captain Dirk had a long discussion on cruising, boats and plans for the future.

Dirk is a Trans-Ocean Verein member and has been sailing for decades.  He has made a circumnavigation, as well as, several trans-Atlantic crossings.  His favorite voyage was through the Panama Canal, up the US and Canadian West Coast to Alaska.  He arrived in Nassau coming in from Puerto Rico.  He has a young man crewing for him at this time.  In the past, he had a grandson who served as his crew.  Dirk’s wife often travels with him.  She remained in Puerto Rico and will join him sometime later this month.  Dirk really likes these strong winds as he has a heavy, seaworthy boat which can readily handle the 20+ knot winds and 6 foot plus waves.  He has been in much worse many times during his decades of sailing.

Carla spent much of the day cleaning and polishing.  The boat is starting to look pretty good again.  It will be up to her high standards in another day or so of scrubbing and waxing.
