Cambridge Cay - Day 2

It was another warm, bright, sunny day with very calm waters.  We ate breakfast, loaded our snorkel gear and set out in the dinghy for “The Aquarium” which is a prime spot to observe hundreds of fish living off a very small cay and reef.  Carla brought some mashed peas and carrots to feed the fish.  Fish were gathering around the dinghy as we tied off to one of two dinghy mooring balls at “The Aquarium”.  Like the iguanas at Allans Cay, they knew they’d get a free meal when they hear an outboard motor approaching.  We spent over an hour swimming among the fish.  Dwayne used the GoPro camera to take pictures.  We decided to head further north in the dinghy before heading back to Foreign Affair for lunch.

We really covered a lot of territory since we could zip along on plane in the very calm waters.  It was good for the outboard to run at high RPM for a while and Carla liked skimming along at high speed.  She wanted to check out Johnny Depp’s private island.  So, we headed there first.  It had a wonderful beach.  There were a couple of structures whose roofs were visible; however, you couldn’t see much of the buildings due to the vegetation around them.  We were impressed by the elaborate beach furniture and fixtures on another nearby island.  Plush lounge chairs and a very large bar/dining shelter lined the beach.  There was a larger than most house a short walk from the beach.  It had a wonderful view of the water, beach and islands from the second story.  We are sure it didn’t adversely impact on the property value of Johnny Depp’s island.

We discovered an interesting mega-yacht anchored not far from this private cay with its posh second-home.  What made this yacht unusual was the giant inflatable water slide.  It had to be seen to appreciate its size.  We are sure this mega came well-equipped with personal water craft (SeaDoos), kayaks, paddle boards, kite boards, dive gear, float platforms, and perhaps, a chute which could be pulled by the big tender to loft someone high into the sky for a thrilling ride and an aerial view of the yacht and its surroundings.  Some boys have all the big toys.

Later in the day, we returned to Rocky Dundas to see if conditions to access the caves was better than the previous day.  It was not, so we headed off to walk the shallow exposed flats of Cambridge Cay.  It was a wonderful experience walking over the vast expanse of sand that at high tide was covered by 3 feet of water.  We found several live conchs, numerous small coral and a variety of plant life.  The water was very warm and the sun glistened off the transparent water.  Very few places on earth are this beautiful and interesting.  Pictures cannot capture the beauty and wonder of these waters and islands.

Once again, we returned to Foreign Affair tired and a little sun-burnt from our day’s adventures.  Tomorrow, we will be off to Big Major and Staniel Cays.
