Nassau - Day 3

We were awaken by the wakes of boats moving around the harbor starting around 0730.  We resigned ourselves to the fact we couldn’t sleep much longer and finally got up for a leisurely breakfast.  At 1000 we were in front of the marina waiting for a cab to take us to Rawson Square where the cruise ships off-load their passengers for tours of Nassau.  We booked a driving tour of the city and were soon on our way about town with an entertaining driver/guide who called herself “Sexy Mary”.

Our driving tour gave us a good overview of the business and governmental district and harbor.  We drove past the Parliament Building, the Supreme Court and Government House which is the equivalent of the American White House.  The old Nassau jail is now a library and museum.  We got a quick view of the National Stadium which was hosting an international track and field meet.  We took a tour of Fort Fincastle which gave us a good vantage point for viewing the harbor and oldest sections of the city.  It is one of three fortifications which once protected Nassau and the harbor.

Two of our stops were at businesses that were unique to Nassau.  One was Tasty Teas which specializes in herbal teas having significant health benefits such as curing or preventing numerous illnesses, as well as enhancing memory or serving as an aphrodisiac.  TripAdvisor rated Tasty Teas as a fun stop with very positive reviews.  It was OK but nothing as informative or beneficial as our experience with herbal remedies in Beijing, China.  Still it was entertaining.

More to Dwayne’s taste was the visit to the rum cake factory.  Several samples of rum cake were available.  They were all very moist and potent.  We bought several cakes of different flavors knowing they would be eaten a long before their “serve by” date.

We also crossed over to Paradise Island and made a quick stop at the Atlantis Resort.  Dwayne headed to the Atlantis Marina Village to see how the marina was laid out and learn more about the shops and restaurants located there.  Carla headed to the casino to see the Chihuly art sculptures and high end retail shops which are adjacent to the casino.

Upon leaving Pleasure Island, the cruise ship passengers on the tour were returned to the cruise ship dock so they could board their ships.  We asked the tour guide to drop us at the fish market so we could get supper.  There are dozens of shacks and shops selling food and drink along the street leading to the docks.  Generators in the street are used to provide electricity to these establishment. There is a common public restroom at the end of the street. Patrons are predominantly locals.

Frank and Carol wanted to eat at the Twin Brothers and the tour guide said it was a good choice.  One of the brothers died and the restaurant is now called "Captain Bud's".  We had another good Bahamian feast – fried and broiled snapper with sides of plantains, rice and beans, as well as, mac and cheese.  Yummy.

It was a short walk from the fish market to our marina.  Frank and Carol boarded their boat.  Dwayne and Carla discovered they had new neighbors.  Cecil and Elena invited them aboard Sophia, for sun-downers.  Cecil is retired from the Navy.  He and Elena have been cruising for the past two years.  They came to Nassau from the Exumas and will remain here a few more days before heading out to explore the northern Bahamian islands.
