Hakuna Matata Heads South

We bid farewell to Frank and Carol and helped them cast off. Hakuna Matata disappeared into the rising sun. She was headed south for warmer weather.

Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church

It was a great day for a walk. So, we headed into Georgetown to check out some of the local points of interest we had not yet visited. The Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church was only a few blocks from the marina. This parish was formed in 1721 and named after the English Prince George who later became King George II. The church is one of a few that pre-date the American Revolution. It was desecrated during both the Revolutionary War and War Between the States. Repairs and additions have been made over the years; however, the colonial period pew boxes and much of the interior date back over 200 years.

We spent several hours in the Georgetown County Museum. The exhibits cover a broad spectrum of life in the county. Several Indian tribes inhabited portions of the county until they were displaced by the increasing numbers of colonists who established plantations or businesses which supported commerce. A section of the museum was dedicated to the early colonial period.

Loyalties were divided during the American Revolution. A local American hero was Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox". A small exhibit addresses his role in the American Revolution. There is a sizable collection of rifles used during the War Between the States. The "Second Yankee Invasion" exhibit explains how wealthy Northerners took advantage of the depressed economy of the county in the early years of the 20th Century and bought up thousands of acres of land and converted plantation manor houses into elaborate hunting lodges.

Industries highlighted were cultivation of indigo and rice; ship building and shrimping; logging, paper manufacturing and steel production. Overall, it was one of the better county museums we have visited.

We had dinner shortly after dark. We watched television for while. We only receive a few channels. There are not many good shows on these days. Carla did some reading while Dwayne continued to research options for our voyage through the Bahamas.
