U.S. Military Academy - West Point

We stopped at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point on the way back from Newport.  Significant changes have been made since Dwayne was on faculty there.  A new academic building, sports fields and parking lots have occupied part of The Plain.  Yet, some things have not changed much like the quarters Dwayne lived in while stationed there.


Mahan Hall hasn't changed; however, the English Department has moved to Jefferson Hall, the newest academic building on campus.


We visited the Old Cadet Chapel and Cemetery.  The chapel hasn't change at all but the cemetery looks different due to the addition of the above ground columbaria.  This solution to the lack of space for traditional graves has made it possible to honor more deceased who were associated with the Academy; however, it has greatly changed the appearance of much of the cemetery.  The oldest part of the cemetery has not changed.  General Custer's grave site hasn't changed at all.
