Ma B Tours Annapolis
Tuesday, May 26, 2015
Carla and I took Ma B for a short road trip to Annapolis since she hadn't been there. We had lunch at Chick and Ruth's (great Rubin sandwiches). Then, walked the inner harbor where we meet some Loopers (members of the America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association) and saw the Topsail Schooner, Lynx which is a replica of the privateer of the same name which fought in the War of 1812. Finally, we took a guided tour of the US Naval Academy.
.
The Lynx, is a replica of a Baltimore tops'l schooner which served as a privateer raiding British shipping during the War of 1812. The American navy was very small in 1812. To increase our naval power, letters of marque (licenses to attack enemy ships) were issued to the owners of vessels capable of mounting guns and conducting war. The original Lynx, was built at Fell's Point near Baltimore and attacked British merchant vessels thus causing damage to British trade and providing funds for the American war effort and profits to the ships' owners.
The US Naval Academy was established in 1845. Most of the buildings on campus are in the Beaux Arts style popular when they were built in the early 20th century. Bancroft Hall is the most stunning example. It serves as the acedemy dormitory and houses all of the over 4,000 midshipmen. It is believed to be the largest college dormitory in the world.
Commissioning Week ended just prior to our visit. The Tecumseh Statue was still covered with paint celebrating commissioning of the recently graduated class and the transformation of "Plebes" into upper-classmen. The statue is a replica of the figurehead of the USS Delaware. one of the Navy's early vessels and ship-of -the line. This bronze statue was presented to the academy by the Class of 1891 and is of great significance to the graduates and midshipmen due to its magical power and ability to bestow good luck.
