Nassau

We intend to depart for the Berry Islands tomorrow and did the usual things such as taking on water and provisions to prepare for an early departure.  We will refuel on our way out since the fuel dock was not located in the marina.  We decided to head down to Junkanoo Beach for the Carnival Parade and big party being thrown as part of the FIFA World Sand Football Championship.  Our neighbors, Robert and Jeanette on Great Escape headed in for the big parade as well.  We walked and they took a cab.  We met them at the festival site later in the evening.

Carnival Parade

We decided to walk across the bridge connecting Paradise Island to downtown Nassau.  It gave us a wonderful view of the harbor.  Once across, we intended to take a jitney to Junkanoo Beach; however, we walked instead which was quite a distance and good exercise.  The final soccer game of the day was just ending as we reached the new soccer stadium built specifically to support the FIFA games.  The Brazilian team looks like the favorite to win in the finals scheduled for tomorrow.  The Carnival Parade had already started by the time we reached Junkanoo Beach and we only caught the tail end of it.  We proceeded to the east end of the beach where a large band stand and VIP boxes were located for the big concert.  Vendors were still stocking their booths and tents in preparation for the evening.

We met up with Robert, Jeanette and their daughter just before dark.  The concert was scheduled to start at 9 PM.  We sat around snacking and drinking items purchased from the vendors while waiting for the parade into the concert site.  There was a lot of talk among the Bahamians about the vast amount of money spent on the games and associated activities.  The best Bahamian bands were booked for the evening.  We waited with great anticipation for the festivities to begin; however, as the clock approached 10 PM only a few people were trickling into the concert site and no VIPs had shown up to occupy their booths.  When we asked why it was published the performances were to begin at 9 PM yet nothing was happening, we were advised, “9 PM Island Time.  Ebry bdy nos com erly tonite like tin r zo. Parti go al nite. Mybe til sun com up.”  We left before the concert began since we had an early departure in the morning.  We shared a cab with 9 other people and the first band had just started playing as we drove away.  The mini-van cab was jammed full and it was an interesting ride.  We joined Robert and Jeanette for a night cap before turning in for the evening.
