Magothy River to Summit North Marina

We spent the night anchored behind Dobbins Island inside the mouth of the Magothy River and west of Gibson Island. This is one of our favorite anchorages. There is plenty of depth and the waters in the Magothy are always calm even when the waves are high on the Bay. Three other sail boats anchored near us for the evening. We had sun-downers in the cockpit on a warm autumn night.

Our Cockpit View on the Magothy River
We departed the Magothy River at about 0800 since it would be a long run back to Summit North Marina. We'd be going against the tide for much of the day. We encountered a fair number of cruisers heading south for the winter. We wished we were doing the same as it will be a bit colder when we begin our southbound trip at the end of the month. Traffic on the Bay was light. The sun was bright, the temperatures hit the low 70s and as is often the case, the wind was in our face. So, we had to motor the entire distance. We encountered several commercial vessels on the Elk River and in the C&D Canal. The tide was with us as we entered the canal which helped us get to Schaefer's to refuel.

CSL Reliance on the Elk River
We entered Summit North Marina just as the tide was at its low. We touched bottom right at the entrance and plowed through the mud until we went to a complete stop just 20 feet from our dock. Carla went below to start dinner while Dwayne waited for the tide to come in enough to float us off the bottom. We drifted to the dock moments before Carla was ready to serve dinner. We noticed dredging equipment had arrived while we were gone the past few days. Dredging will begin on Monday. We went aground trying to leave Summit North Marina in April, 2015. Deepening the channel has been long overdue.
