Annapolis and Seven Seas Cruising Association Gam

We slept in and it felt good to do so. Breakfast was whatever you could make for yourself or get someone to make for you. Shortly after breakfast, we were off to Annapolis. Beth had never been there before. So, she was excited to see the historic harbor she had heard so much about. Carla wanted to shop for some clothes she needed for our China trip in October and our Caribbean cruise in December. (Brother Brian found some travel deals we couldn't pass up.) Dwayne needed filters and parts for Foreign Affair. Dwayne dropped off Carla and Beth on West Street and he headed off to Bayshore Marine for fuel and oil filters. We all ate lunch at Chick and Ruth' - lump crab and malts.

From Annapolis, we headed to Camp Letts for the Seven Seas Cruising Association (SSCA) gam. Carla and Dwayne joined Seven Seas after having cruised a few months. We attended our first SSCA gam this same time last year and like last year, it was a dismal day - cool and rainy. We had a great time meeting fellow cruisers and sharing cruising information. Friday night is pot luck night. We brought a Mexican bean dip salad and tortilla chips. The pot luck table was full of wonderful food and there was plenty of it.

We had dinner with some friends and acquaintances we met during our travels. Scott and Freddie of Chardonnay, a Seaton 60 Ketch, invited us to join them at their table. Scott is the Past Commodore of SSCA and Freddie is the current Commodore of the Capital Yacht Club. We came to know each other while Foreign Affair took refuge in Washington, D.C. when Hurricane Joaquin passed through a year ago. They are a very welcoming couple and accomplished sailors. Freddie is very busy this year as the new Capital Yacht Club is under construction. We've seen architectural drawings and it will be a showcase building on the waterfront not far from the Capital Mall.

Bob Bitchin and Jody were also at our table. We had a chance to become acquainted with them last year at the Southwest International Boat Show in Clear Lake not far from Houston. We spent an hour or so hiding from the rain in their booth and listening to Bob and Jody tell us their story and giving us advice on how to survive and thrive while cruising. Bob and Jody have sailed around the world on their beautiful 56 foot, Formosa Pilothouse Ketch, Lost Soul. Bob is the founder of several magazines, author of several books and man behind the TV series Latitudes and Attitudes. His wife, Jody keeps Bob young and happy. Beth was surprised to learn the heavily tattooed, burly old salt sitting across from her was the keynote speaker for the gam. Beth can't deny she met some interesting characters since signing on as crew. (A link to a video featuring Lost Soul follows.)
