Block Island

After breakfast, we took the water taxi in for an early start on our hike across the island. We decided to cut down the center of Block Island and walk along the beach below the Mohegan Bluffs and then head through New Shoreham on the way back to our boat on the Great Salt Pond. However, before we began our journey we had breakfast courtesy of Aldo's Bakery and their delivery boat. Aldo's pastry boat slowly cruises through the anchorage and announces its presence with the crew's sing-song cry of "Andiamo . . . andiamooo!" We got coffee and croissants. Yum, Yum.

The water taxi dropped us at the dock by The Oar. We started our hike down the road bisecting the island and passing along the border of the airport. It was hotter than we expected and we took a break at the airport to sip some iced tea while watching the small planes taking off and landing. After our refreshing break, we headed off for the Mohegan Cliffs. The view from the top of the cliffs is spectacular. We decided to descend to the beach below and view the cliffs from sea level as we walked their length. We rose back to the top of the cliffs and hiked the short distance to the South East Lighthouse which began operation in 1875 and is open for tours. We rested there for a while and then headed off for the Spring House Hotel for appetizers and drinks before making our way through town for ice cream and finally back to Foreign Affair. We hiked just over 10 miles today.
