Highbourne Cay Anchorage to Highbourne Cay Marina
Monday, April 03, 2017
We spent a
quiet night at anchor and we were up early enough to catch the 0800 weather
report broadcast from Highbourne Cay.
Today was forecast to be winds from the Southeast at 10-15 miles per
hour which is good. Tomorrow, a small craft warning will go into effect with
winds from the Southeast at greater than 20 miles per hour and seas of 4
feet. We knew we wanted to be in the
Highbourne Cay Marina for the poor weather conditions. We initially thought we’d anchor out one more
night and then move into the marina.
However, the winds built faster than expected. When all the other sailboats in the anchorage
disappeared, we changed our minds and called for a slip. We were lucky as the marina was full shortly
after noon. We were in a good place for
the next two days.

Most of the
boats in the marina were multi-million dollar sport fishing boats and very large
motor yachts. Our neighbors here spend
more in fuel and crew expenses each year than what we paid for our boat. The facilities are first class as one would
expect. The beach is fabulous. We spent the day there after getting our boat
chores completed.

A Catalina 355 out of Clearwater, Florida, Even Keel, was in the slip next to us. Chris and Cindy came over for sundowners. They will also be heading south down the Exuma chain. This is their second trip to the Bahamas. Chris plans to retire soon and is hoping Cindy will agree to taking an extended cruise or live aboard for a while after retirement. She’s not as excited as he is with that option but does like cruising for a few weeks at a time. Frank and Carol joined us as well and stayed on for dinner - BBQ beef, corn and cole slaw.
The winds
died down more than we expected. We
might have had a good night at anchor.
But, we are glad we came in for a slip as the weather could change
quickly for the worse. We’d rather not
be rocking and rolling in an exposed anchorage.
Its better to be tied to the dock.
A seaplane
came in yesterday and today. It lands on
the lagoon just west of the Highbourne Cay Marina. You can see the seaplane in the Google link:
Wow, fabulous!
