Radar Reflector and Super Bowl
Sunday, February 05, 2017
Forest dropped
by shortly after breakfast. He knew we had to go aloft to re-install our radar
reflector. He brought “Mighty Mo” with him to help make the job easier. “Mighty Mo” is a Milwaukee right angle drill
adapted with a bit designed to fit a winch socket. Instead of having to
manually turn the winch with a winch handle, “Might Mo” could do the job with
the push of a button.
Dwayne Aloft - Installing Radar Reflector |
Forest and
Dwayne spent over a half hour trying to decide how best to hang the reflector
so it could be raised and lowered and also allow flags to be hoisted on a
halyard. An inventory of parts was completed and the sequence of steps for
installation agreed upon. Dwayne got into the boatswain’s chair and soon Forest
and Carla were hauling him aloft. It took about 45 minutes to get the ball
installed and Dwayne back on deck. We now have a very functional radar reflector
set-up. It was well worth the extra effort.
We went
ashore for showers before heading over to the Vero Beach Yacht Club for dinner
and to watch the Super Bowl. It was very convenient since the yacht club is
directly adjacent to the Vero Beach Municipal Marina. The buffet line was
pretty basic: sloppy joes, hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, fruit salad,
taco chips, salsa and sheet cake. All the tables had been reserved by members.
We sat comfortably at the bar eating and watching the game.
Super Bowl Party at Vero Beach Yacht Club |
The crowd
seemed evenly divided between cheering for the Patriots and Falcons. We were
rooting for the Falcons but not disappointed when they lost since the Patriot’s
come-back was such a marvelous achievement. Over half the people left by the
end of the third quarter. Those who stayed to the winning touchdown were glad they did as the
last four minutes were suspenseful. It was the best Super Bowl game in years. The
Vero Beach Yacht Club members were very welcoming. We were fortunate to be able
to watch the game in such a warm and friendly setting.
