Leavenworth, Kansas to Blair, Nebraska - Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Sergeant Floyd River Museum

It is off to Alaska via Canada.  We are taking a road trip to Vancouver where we will begin our journey north to Alaska and the Yukon Territory.  The first leg of our driving tour took us from Leavenworth to Blair, Nebraska.  We are avoiding the inter-state highways as much as possible and covering about 250 miles or so per day.  We made several stops on this leg.  We visited the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and the Sergeant Floyd River Museum, Sergeant Floyd was the only member of the Lewis and Clark "Corps of Discovery" to die during the over two year long expedition.

The Sergeant Floyd River Museum is located aboard the MV Sergeant Floyd which is now aground on the Sioux City waterfront.  The interior of the MV Sergeant Floyd has been converted to a museum dedicated to the history of river traffic on the Missouri River.  The MV Sergeant Floyd was a Corps of Engineers inspection boat and served on the Missouri River from 1933 to 1975.  The Missouri River Valley was transformed during the damming and  channeling of the river beginning in the 1930s.  Thankfully, numerous skilled artist and photographers captured much of the beauty of the river while it still meandered across its wide valley.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is just a few steps away from the MV Sergeant Floyd.  This center is devoted to the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Outside the museum are replicas of the keelboat and pirouges used by the Corps of Discovery during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
