Georgetown

We woke, had breakfast, took showers and were prepared to meet friends for a day trip when we discovered the toilet would not flush.  The joker valve was inverted and needed to be replaced as it was clogged with sediment.  Carla, our sanitation engineer once again rose to the occasion.  She had the toilet torn apart and had the parts needed to effect repairs.  All was in working order in less than an hour.  Our guests waited ashore having coffee at a local restaurant while we completed our repairs, weighed anchor and moved to the dock to pick them up for the day.

Pete at the Wheel - Winyah Bay

We departed Georgetown with the initial intent of heading up the Waccamaw River to travel through the abandoned rice fields and perhaps see some alligator.  However, Dwayne got us headed up the Great Pee Dee River rather than the Waccamaw River and we did not realize our mistake until we reached a fixed bridge which we could not pass under.  The two rivers run parallel to each other and empty into Winyah Bay at the same point.  We reversed course and headed back into the bay.

It was then decided to continue further out into Winyah Bay where we might see some dolphin and get a chance to sail some.  We traveled about 5 miles further down the bay and found enough room to finally hoist sail.  We tacked back and forth across the bay in mild winds against a flood tide ripping along at less than 2 knots.  We saw no dolphin and reversed course to head back to Georgetown to arrive at 4 pm for sun-downers with people who helped us dock at the marina in the morning.  The tide and 5 mph wind pushed us along at over 5 knots.  We arrived in Georgetown at 4 as planned.

Once docked, we got together with Barry and Marcia who have just returned from the Bahamas on Iolanthe, a Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 41.  Their son who was crewing for them joined us on Foreign Affair for sun-downers.  We then moved to Iolanthe for a while to view their boat which is the first of its kind we have encountered.  They will be staying in Georgetown a couple of days before heading north on the ICW bound for Annapolis.  We might see them some time later on the Chesapeake.

We ended the day with a simple hamburger and baked beans dinner.  Carla did the laundry while Dwayne reviewed our route for tomorrow’s 50 mile run to Barefoot Landing.
