A Good Day in St. Augustine

We made it safely through the night. There was no apparent damage to Foreign Affair. We have been through worse weather than we experienced this weekend. However, it was the first time we got tornado warnings from our cell phones. It is good to know this phone feature works. We are also fortunate to have good daily weather forecasts from our weather forecaster and router, Chris Parker and his crew. It was their forecast which prompted us to depart Georgetown a day earlier than planned and encouraged us to run as far south as we could so as to avoid the severe storms which we experienced over the past few days.

Pizza Time - TripAdvisor's #2 Best Pizza Parlor in the USA

Our morning began as usual with a cup of coffee and discussion about what had to be done today. The first item on the list was to see if we had any further sewage leakage. All looked clean and dry when we checked. We called First Mate Marine to order a new macerator. They worked on Foreign Affair in the past. Bo and his wife, Trish are good people and we’d rather support a local business than a big national chain like West Marine. Also, they were able to order the parts with next day delivery at a price half way between what we found from West Marine and discounters on the internet. So, we are happy to save some money and expect the parts to arrive tomorrow.

We took the water taxi ashore. Dwayne checked in with the marina staff to let them know we needed to stay an additional day due to repairs. When the name of our boat was mentioned, a fellow in the marina office stepped up to Dwayne and introduced himself as Carl, the owner of Maluka which shared the anchorage with us at Pine Island. They came in late and left early at Pine Island, so we didn’t get a chance to gam.

Our next stop was Price’s Barber Shop for Dwayne’s quarterly haircut. Price’s is an “old school’ barber shop with six chairs and constant traffic. The gal cutting his hair did a super job. She even did the trim work around the ears with hot shaving cream and a straight razor just like in the old days.
Carla was getting hungry as she just had coffee and a little yogurt for breakfast. So, we headed to Pizza Time for lunch. We got there just before the lunch crowd. A big slice of pizza each and chianti wine for $16. TripAdvisor lists this as the #2 pizza parlor in the United States. It is not a fancy place but the pizza and wine are good, the service quick and the prices very reasonable.

Carl, Carla, Joe and Dwayne - Discussing the Bahamas at  Harry's

We wandered about Old St. Augustine for a while and eventually met Carl and his friend, Joe for drinks at Harry’s, a nice restaurant near the marina. Both had been to the Bahamas many times. Dwayne pulled out our proposed itinerary and they gave us some good tips and commentary on our plans. Carl’s wife will be joining him when he reaches Nassau and Joe will fly back to his home in Montreal, Canada. Carl, his wife and Maluka will remain in the Bahamas until May.  We will probably meet again somewhere in the Bahamas.

It was another good day in St. Augustine.
