Harris Creek - Broad Creek and the Tred Avon River
Sunday, September 06, 2015
Oxford is one of Maryland’s oldest towns. It was a colonial port of entry and home to
several heroes of the American Revolution.
Tourist are drawn to Oxford because of its quaint, small town
atmosphere. One of the major attractions
are the many older homes some of which date back to the colonial period.
The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry has been operating since 1683 and
is believed to be the oldest continuously operated private ferry in the US. Of course, today's ferry is not the
same as carried colonial passengers across the Tred Avon to Oxford.
We explored Harris Creek, Broad Creek and the lower half of
Tred Avon. Harris Creek is the most
tranquil of these three. I suspect very
few sailboats (or any boats for that matter) head up the river just to see what
is upstream. The shore is developed with
modern homes along both banks. Some of the
Harris Creek houses are large but not ostentatious like some located on the
Broad Creek which looked more like small resorts than private residences. A few homes on Broad Creek resemble early
colonial plantation manor houses. Broad
Creek must be stunningly beautiful in the fall when the leaves are
changing. The Tred Avon is much busier
than either Harris Creek or Broad Creek particularly around Oxford which has a
good harbor facilities and attracts tourist by road as well as waterway. We anchored in Trippe Creek just a short
distance upstream from Oxford.
We passed a beautiful wooden cat rigged boat on the Tred Avon just short of Oxford. Had to take a picture. What a great way to spend the holiday weekend.
