Harbour Town Yachting Center/Sea Pines Resort - Hilton Head Island to Beaufort
Thursday, April 28, 2016
We had an easy day since there were no obstacles and plenty of deep water between Harbour Town and Beaufort. Once again, the weather was perfect during our run to Beaufort. Janet was at the helm most of the day. We saw two Leatherback sea turtles as we crossed Port Royal Sound; however, we were too slow with the cameras to get any good pictures. The first one we saw was only 15 feet off the port side as we motored past. It took us a while to get cameras out and turn the boat for a closer look. By then, the turtle took his third deep breath and dove out of sight. The second turtle sighting took place about 20 minutes later. This turtle was farther away from the boat and disappeared as we turned to approach it. Still, it was interesting to see these creatures, as well as, the dolphins as we travel.
Marine Corps Recruit Depot - Paris Island |
We passed Paris Island. The big white water tower lets you know this is where "We Make Marines". Paris Island, SC and San Diego, CA are the basic training centers for new recruits to the Marine Corps. Males recruited from east of the Mississippi River and all females recruits receive their basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot - Paris Island.

We took a mooring ball at Beaufort which gave us an opportunity to go into town without having to worry about our anchor dragging and the boat going aground. Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina. Many of the homes near the downtown area were built by plantation owners and merchants prior to the Civil War. Once again, the river cruise ship, Independence, was docked near us. Tours of this historic town, horse drawn carriage rides, boutique shops, the riverfront park and nearby restaurants make this a particularly attractive stop.
We had dinner at Q on Bay which is noted for its BBQ and Lowcountry food. Brian and Janet shared the Barnyard Platter (brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs). Dwayne and Carla split Brunswick stew, pulled pork sandwich, with grits and cheese for a side. Desert was pecan pie and ice cream. We were entertained by a good trio playing a fine mix of songs all of which we knew. After dinner, we took a stroll around the downtown admiring the old homes and looking for a mailbox so Carla could sent out postcards.
