Beaufort

We walked along Bay Street to admire the many beautiful antebellum homes facing the Beaufort River.  The city of Beaufort was spared from destruction by the Union army which occupied the city and used the many fine homes for headquarters and hospitals.  The Beaufort armory is today a local history museum and looks much as it did over 150 years ago.

The afternoon was dedicated to a briefing on the next leg of our journey.  We will finally be entering Georgia.  The first stop will be Thunderbolt, just south of Savannah.

The evening was spent at the Beaufort Sailing and Yacht Club.  The Beaufort Chamber of Commerce hosted an oyster and BBQ dinner at the yacht club.  Members of the club provided transportation.  After dinner we viewed the movie, The Big Chill, which was filmed in and around Beaufort.  Several movies were shot in part in the city.  The Beaufort River bridge appeared in the movie, Forest Gump when Forest is running across the United States and shown crossing the Mississippi River.  He was in fact crossing the Beaufort River.

We were surprised to see a fleet of C Scows at the Beaufort Sailing and Yacht Club.  Apparently, a member who relocated from Michigan sailed scows in the Midwest and introduced scows to the Beaufort Sailing and Yacht Club members.  The club now has a sizable racing fleet of C Scows.  Dwayne and Carla fondly remember racing their old Johnson C Scow, Illusion.
