Sydney
Our first impression of Sydney is that it could be Australia's equivalent of New York City. Sydney's population is just over 5 Million. It was first settled by the English as a penal colony in 1788 on the banks of Botany Bay which is the world's largest natural harbor and about as far from England as you can get. Urban renewal is underway with many of the older commercial and residential structures near the waterfront being torn down and replaced by luxury high rise towers. Fortunately, some areas of the city have been declared historic districts and retain some of the character of early Sydney. Among the most noted city landmarks are the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Tower. Numerous museums and cultural venues, both old and new are located throughout the city.

Sydney remains a center for trade and commerce. It is the largest port in Australia. The Australian Navy maintains a base in the harbor with several warships at dock. The original Army barracks with its stone wall continues to serve the Australian Army. The harbor was very busy with one cruise ship at dock, many water ferries, water taxis, tour boats and private yachts negotiating the crowded inner harbor. We walked along the wharf to the Opera House and went inside for a brief look-see before seeking out a place for lunch. We ended up at the oldest pub in Sydney, the Fortune of War. Dwayne had kangaroo steak which he shared so everyone could have a taste. It was very delicious, tasting much like beef. Much of the credit goes to the waitress who suggested he get it cooked medium and to the chef who prepared it to perfection.

After lunch, we went to the renown Bondi Beach to see what it was all about. It was twenty somethings and younger sunning and surfing along a beachfront lined with eateries and shops catering to beach goers and tourists. Carla and Janet had to get their feet wet in the bay. Dwayne took pictures from the shore. We returned to our hotel just before dark. Another great day ended.
