Newport,RI to New London, CT

We left Newport at 0730. The Norwegian Cruise Line's Gem was anchored just outside the inner harbor entrance. We suspected many of those aboard would be going to the boat show. At Newport Neck, we encountered the USS John P. Murtha (LPD-26), an amphibious transport dock heading into Narragansett Bay. We gave her a wide berth and watched her head under the Newport Bridge to most likely dock at Naval Station Newport. Later we would run the gauntlet of ferries crossing to the islands - Martha's Vineyard, Block, and Long Island.

At about noon, we were able to put the genoa out to help gain an extra 1/2 knot of speed which is not much but every little bit helps on a long trip. Our top speed for the day was 6 1/2 knots. We hit "The Race" at peak current against us which considerably slowed us down. Our lowest speed was just short of 1 knot (0.9 knot). Our average speed through "The Race" was probably around 3 knots. We headed up the Thames River and anchored just off the US Coast Guard Academy. We stayed there before and it served us well in the past. The Midshipmen were out sailing dinghies when we arrived. We were the only boat in the anchorage for the night. Carla liked to hear the bugle calls and chapel bells from the academy. Sound travels a long way on the water when the night is still.
