Connecticut River

We began our journey up the Connecticut River at about 0800. Fewer and fewer homes occupied the river bank as we headed inland. The homes we did observe were frequently built high above the river on the granite cliffs lining the shore. Most of the shoreline was wooded as was the top of the bluffs. We were amazed at how little development there was for most of our run up the river. We were told by locals very few people could afford to build along the river due to the challenges of building upon granite at heights above the floodline. Railroad tracks along both banks also deterred construction. Overall, the Connecticut River is one of the most scenic and least developed rivers we have traveled.
A distinctive structure sitting high on a bluff above East Haddam is Gillette Castle. The castle was built for William Gillette an American actor, playwright and director who made a career and fortune playing the part of Sherlock Holmes for over 30 years. He is credited with making the deerstalker hat, curved briar pipe and long traveling coat Sherlock Holmes trademarks.

We encountered many small powerboats and jet skis on the river. Scores of boats were anchored off the river's larger islands which had sandy shores filled with sunbathers and campers. Canoes and kayaks were frequently seen along the shore where they could stay out of fast boat traffic. A few powerboats were pulling water skiers. More boats were towing kids on inflatable tubes. We were the odd boat out as few sailboats headed up river as far as we were on the 4th of July. The Sound, not the River, was where the sailors head for the holiday.

Our total run for the day was 66 miles. We went almost all the way to Hartford before turning back. We arrived at our anchorage off Nott Island just after sunset but before dark. We are glad we made the journey.
Our 4th of July celebration was rather subdued. Some of those around us were setting off private pyrotechnic displays. We did see some commercial fireworks being set off somewhat downstream from us; however, it was not as dramatic as it might have been had we been closer. In the end, we stayed up longer than usual and enjoyed the evening.
